THE BENEFITS OF MINDFUL EATING Recent studies indicate that meal timing and frequency may impact cardiovascular health, and disease risks. While eating patterns vary from person to person, research indicates that effective management of cardiometabolic health should focus on ‘intentional eating’–paying attention to standardize eating times, meal sizes, and food content. Data shows that distributing calories over a defined period of the day, coupled with maintaining a consistent overnight fast period, could ultimately yield positive benefits surrounding cardiometabolic health–in addition to eating a larger portion of one’s daily caloric intake earlier in the day. Skipping meals and snacking, which have become increasingly prevalent, have various effects on cardiometabolic health markers: namely obesity, lipid profile, insulin resistance, and blood pressure. Most importantly, planning each meal with a variety of healthy foods, and timing meals, can help manage hunger, achieve desired portion control, and improve nutrition quality.

Healthy cells are more than just a matter of luck or chance. What supplements in weight loss? There are very few supplements that mimic the actions of successful drugs used for weight loss. Meal replacements bars and shakes are the only supplements that may actually work. It’s important to note that supplements alone are NOT a weight loss program, whereas diet and exercise can be. The goal of incorporating a dietary supplement (or drug) into a weight loss program is to assist the user in complying with the daily routine that leads to weight loss. And, as with all human studies on meal replacements, the supplement ingredients must have safely demonstrated the potential to act in one or more of the following ways: 1. I have been quite skeptical about coconut oil. However I was vindicated by a new article that proved that coconut oil and dairy fats pose similar cardiovascular risk. Coconut oil and butter in particular were singled out as high in LDL cholesterol and saturated fats. Despite the belief among 72% of Americans that coconut oil is a healthy food, the popular oil actually contains 82% saturated fat and should not be a preferred oil for food preparation, cautioned Frank M. Sacks, MD, professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at Harvard University, Boston, and his fellow researchers. Patients who replaced coconut oil or other saturated fat sources with safflower or soybean oil in the core trials saw improvements in cardiovascular risk, according to the results of the meta-analysis. On the other hand, replacing saturated fats with carbohydrates did not improve patients’ risk of CVD, according to the investigators, although further research into the effects of different types of carbohydrates is needed. “Because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD, and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil” and other oils high in saturated fats, the researchers wrote. Diabetic pill Metformin was shown to increase the lifespan of diabetics by 15% as compared with those who did not take the medication and even those who were not diabetic. It is full of carbs, sugar and it is consumed in the morning which prevents the burning of fat for the whole day. However some people can’t think of breakfast without cereal! Shopping for healthy cereal can be tricky. There are a lot of factors to consider, not the least of which is taste. First, some good news: Consumers are getting smarter about their cereal selections and driving up demand for healthy, low-sugar options. Companies are noticing and responding to this change in consumer demand. Several cereal manufacturers have added more whole grains across their product lines and trimmed significant amounts of sugar. But there’s still room for improvement. Manufacturers are still playing fast and loose with packaging claims, which can mislead you into thinking cereals are more virtuous than they actually are. Follow this guide to avoid the most common health traps in the cereal aisle: Whole grain claims Be wary of vague label claims like “made with whole grains” or “now with more whole grains.” The products do contain some whole grain, but the companies aren’t telling you how much. These claims don’t ensure that a product contains a meaningful amount of whole grain; in fact, they often indicate that a product is made primarily with refined grains like enriched white flour, rice flour, or corn flour — with just a few dashes of whole wheat in the mix. Bypass the front-of-package claims and zero in on the ingredients list instead. The first ingredient listed should contain the word “whole,” such as “whole wheat,” “whole brown rice,” or “whole corn.” If the first ingredient is “whole,” you know the product is primarily whole grain. If a product states “100% whole grain,” even better — that’s a guarantee that the product contains no refined grains at all. Added sugar Unless a cereal contains dried fruit, it’s likely that all of the sugar it contains is added sugar, which provides empty calories and no nutritional benefits. Look for cereals that have no more than 8 grams of sugar per serving — the less, the better. If a cereal does contain dried fruit (like Raisin Bran), the sugar content will likely be much higher since you’re also getting natural sugar from the fruit. Since the label only lists the TOTAL grams of sugar, there’s no way of telling how much sugar is from the fruit and how much is added. If you’d rather be in control of the sugar content, consider buying a plain, whole-grain cereal (like bran flakes) and adding a sprinkling of raisins or your favorite dried fruit. A dash of cinnamon is an added plus. High fiber claims Just because a cereal is high in fiber doesn’t mean it’s whole grain…and it also doesn’t mean it’s an overall healthy choice. Often, the fiber is coming from concentrated added fibers that jack up the fiber numbers but don’t provide all the same benefits as intact fiber from whole grains. Don’t judge a cereal by fiber alone. Even if the fiber content is impressive, you still want to make sure that the first ingredient is a whole grain and the cereal is low in sugar. A sugary cereal with lots of added fiber is still a sugary cereal! Added nutrients Cereal companies often add extra vitamins (vitamin D is especially popular right now) to give their products more health appeal. But, as with added fiber, these “extras” are only valuable if the base product is healthy. Make sure the first ingredient is a whole grain and the product is low in sugar first, before considering any other perks. Among mainstream brands, I recommend Cheerios (regular and multi grain) and Grape-Nuts Flakes. In the office we sell a type of Cheerios with minimal amount of sugar and 15 grams of protein/portion. I like hot cereal and I consume an oatmeal which is also available in our office with almost no sugar and 15 grams of protein/portion. Protein helps keep us full and burn fat as well. The statement offers specific recommendations that support its conclusion that although fruit juice consumption has some benefits, it also has potential detrimental effects, such as high sugar content and lack of fiber and protein which can predispose to inappropriate weight gain. Fruit juice offers no nutritional benefits over whole fruit for infants and children and has no essential role in healthy, balanced diets of children. Excessive juice consumption is associated with diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal distention, and tooth decay. Juice should not be introduced into the diet of infants before 12 months of age unless clinically indicated. Toddlers should not be given juice from bottles or easily transportable covered cups that allow them to consume juice easily throughout the day. Toddlers should not be given juice at bedtime. Children should be encouraged to eat whole fruit to meet their recommended daily fruit intake. Many people still consider fruit juice to be a healthy option for both children and adults. This recommendation confirms that it is not. Juice typically has little fiber compared to whole fruit and is not nutritionally equivalent to whole fruit. While, fruit is a recommended as a component of a healthy diet, fruit juice is not because it is a ready source of excess calories and is typically not as satiating as whole foods. This guideline clarifies that fruit juice has no place in the diet of infants below 12 months of age, and has only a limited place in the diets of older children and adolescents. Researchers in the United Kingdom may have found a way to destroy cancer cells with a combination of vitamin C and antibiotics. The antibiotic used in the research is Doxycycline. The application of vitamin C, following the application of Doxycyline, unexpectedly proved quite effective in destroying cancer stem cells in lab conditions The study was designed by Michael Lisanti, a professor at the University of Salford. The research team’s use of the new combination approach stops cancer cells from altering their diet and basically starves them. These cells are prevented from using any other types of bio-fuels that might be available. Metabolic inflexibility was induced by adding Doxycycline in incrementally higher doses across a period of three months. The result left the cancer cells alive yet they were in a depleted state of existence, making them that much more susceptible to a lack of sustenance through a follow-up metabolic “punch” of sorts. The team then removed the glucose and starved the cancer cells until they perished. The Future of Cancer Combat? The research showed that vitamin C is upwards of 10 times more effective at halting cancer cell growth than other pharmaceutical treatments . The research team reports that the combination of vitamin C with an antibiotic proves about 100 times more effective at combating cancer The beauty of this treatment approach partially lies in the fact that vitamin C and Doxycycline are both non-toxic so there will be minimal, if any, side effects. The research team also pinpointed eight additional drugs that can be used as a follow-up attack after the application of the antibiotic. These drugs include berberine, a completely natural product, along with an array of low-cost drugs that are non-toxic and FDA-approved. Professor Lisanti believes the results of his team’s work prove quite promising for clinical trials. This one-two combination will also likely be used as an add-on to traditional therapies in order to stop the recurrence of tumors, the progressions of the disease and the onset of secondary malignant growths.

The clinical importance of declining testosterone levels in older men is unclear.
In older men, persistent, unequivocally low testosterone levels accompanied by signs and symptoms suggestive of androgen deficiency can be considered late-onset hypogonadism.
Serum testosterone levels gradually decline as men age, but the degree to which this happens, as well as the extent of associated clinical changes, is variable. The clinical importance of this decline is controversial, however. Recognizing this variability and understanding what may be considered changes in body function due to “normal aging” versus potentially treatable age-related testosterone (or androgen) deficiency is crucial in the care of older men.
Free testosterone is considered the biologically active form of the hormone. When it comes to low testosterone, what is normal senescence? What is illness?
Symptoms and signs suggestive of androgen deficiency in older men include reduced libido, low bone mineral density and height loss, and, less specifically, decreased energy, anemia, depressed mood, reduced muscle strength and bulk, and increased body fat. When these signs and symptoms accompany significantly lower levels of both types of testosterone, the patient may be diagnosed with late-onset hypogonadism. Cutoffs for the definition of low testosterone vary, although generally accepted values are ≤200 or ≤300 ng/dL of total testosterone.
The Endocrine Society updated its clinical guidelines on androgen deficiency evaluation and treatment in 2010. It proposed a practical approach to evaluating testosterone deficiency in older men who present with low libido, decreased energy, depressed mood, osteoporosis, or recent fracture. If a clinician suspects testosterone deficiency, the first step should include an early morning total testosterone measurement. If the level is <300 ng/dL, the patient should be evaluated for pituitary or testicular disease and androgen treatment may be considered.

What is healthier a bear claw or a cookie or a soda?

Sugary beverages are among the top sources of calories and added sugar in the American diet.
A 20-ounce serving of Dr Pepper contains 64 grams of added sugar — or 14 grams more than the maximum amount recommended for daily consumption under the United States Dietary Guidelines for 2015-20.
Thus you get less added sugar eating one chocolate chip cookie, one bear claw or blueberry muffin than drinking a 20-ounce serving of Pepsi.
Under regulations established by the Food and Drug Administration during the Obama administration, makers of packaged foods like cereal, cookies and spaghetti sauce will have to add a line to the nutrition panels on their products disclosing the amount of added sugar. Companies have until mid-2018 to comply; it is unknown whether the Trump administration will alter the initiative.
Moreover, it doesn’t apply to restaurants.
Panera a health caring restaurant has also reformulated two of its proprietary drinks, Passion Papaya Green Tea and Agave Lemonade, reducing their sugar content by roughly 40 percent. Passion Papaya now contains 30 grams of added sugar in a 20-ounce serving without ice, while the same size serving of Agave Lemonade contains 34 grams of added sugar.
Those drinks, together with Blood Orange Lemonade, will be labeled “medium sweetened” with the amount of added sugar in them noted.
Panera is also offering three drinks with no added sugar — Iced Black Tea, Plum Ginger Hibiscus Tea and Prickly Pear Hibiscus Agua Fresca. The first two will be labeled “unsweetened,” while the third, which contains naturally occurring sugar, will be labeled “lightly sweetened.”You have a great choice!

Legumes have long been touted as a weapon against diabetes, and now it’s confirmed: Researchers at Spain’s Rovira i Virgili University analyzed 3,349 participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease but without type 2 diabetes. After four years of follow-up, they found that individuals with a higher consumption (28.75 grams a day) of lentils, chickpeas, beans, and peas had a 35 percent lower risk of developing diabetes compared to individuals who consumed fewer total legumes (12.73 grams a day).
Rich in B vitamins, minerals, and fiber, legumes rank low on the glycemic index, meaning that they do not cause spikes in blood glucose levels. The researchers found that substituting half a daily serving of legumes (particularly lentils) for foods rich in protein or simple carbohydrates (including eggs, bread, rice, and baked potato) was also associated with a lower diabetes risk.

Fillers put the volume in cheeks , temples , chin and in the body.
Radiesse is the thickest filler and is optimal for mature people and for males who require volume and lifting. It is the best product for the jaw line and for hand restoration.
Juvaderm has 2 kinds of products. Plain Juvaderm is best for lips while the Juvaderm Plus is great for voluminizing any area like cheeks, temples and chin. We even use this product to reshape the nose, like shorten and straighten it. A new Juvaderm , called Voluma which is great for the cheeks, temples and chin. Volbella is a filler just for the lips. I like Voluma as it makes a beautiful cheek!
Restylane is a little thicker than Juvaderm and is used for in people who want more defined lips. There are new Restylane products: Restylane Silk which is a thinner product to be used for the lipstick lines and under eye treatment (pouches and dark
circles). Restylane Lyft is more robust and can be used deep in the face. It provides a lot of volume. Restylane Define and Restylane Refine are the 2 knew kids on the block. They fill very naturally.
Bolatero is also a thinner product like Restylane Silk to be used under the eyes.
Sculptra is another filler that I do not use much but which is a subtle voluminizer
needing several treatments But it works well in the body as well.
We use all 3 modulators: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. They are great for small wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes, around the eyes. They also lift the eyes and the corners of the mouth. They help with the neck lines and with the jaw line.
My favorites are: the PDO sutures, Radiesse, Juvaderm, Restylane Lyft and Restylane Silk. I also use Dysport the most. I use all 3 modalities and the results are amazing!

Eat Some Cheese

We discussed before that drinking milk was not detrimental for weight or general health. A new study performed at the University of Copenhagen reports that a diet that includes cheese should be recommended for all to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A high dairy intake was associated with a 9% reduction in the risk of stroke, an 18%lower risk of coronary heart disease and a 13% reduction in the risk of stroke. Stroke risk fell by 7% for each 200 ml of milk consumed per day. Consumption of 25g/day of cheese also reduced stroke and coronary heart disease risk. A Chinese/Dutch study found that the largest risk reduction was found with consumption of about 40 g/day. Cheese has also beneficial effects on LDL cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides. While trans fats and saturated fats found in red meat are damaging, saturated fats present in milk,hard cheese and yogurt are rather cardioprotective. They also protect agains chronic diseases as well. Apparently the calcium in the cheese modifies completely the metabolism of the saturated fat. Calcium seems to bind the bile and fatty acids resulting in increased fecal fat secretion. Also a diet high in dairy products reduces the risk of childhood obesity and improves body composition in adults. Yogurt and cheese decrease the risk of diabetes. They promote satiety during periods of energy restriction. Finally dairy products may protect against colorectal, breast, gastric and bladder cancer.Dairy consumption has beneficial effect on bone health in children and adolescents. No benefit was found in adults as osteoporosis starts early in the pediatric population.
